One of the most important decisions you will make regarding the maintenance of your vehicle is who you’ll trust to replace your windshield. Did you know the Windshield is rated by most safety experts to be the third most important safety system in your vehicle? Only the seat belts and airbags are rated higher. In fact, the windshield is integral in supporting the roof in a rollover accident.
In addition, the airbags can not function properly if the windshield is not installed properly. The passenger side airbag uses the windshield as a backstop in a front end collision.
Unfortunately, it is estimated that 70% of windshields are improperly installed. Because there is no state or federal licensing required for auto glass installation, anyone can say they are qualified to install auto glass and there is currently no reliable way for the general public to verify the claim. And currently no one tracks how many windshields end up on the pavement after a crash. There is no box to check on the form for accident investigators, and therefore, no one is tracking it.
Certification is Critical That is why we voluntarily applied and received certification for our company and our techs from the AGSC. This is one of the only independent certification programs in the country to certify auto glass installation companies. You can find Legacy Glass at Safewindshields.org and our technicians listed on the AGSC Website installers page.
How Long Will My Install Take?
We use the NAGS database as a guide, and we can tell you the published hours needed for your particular vehicle. Many vehicles list at 2.5 – 3.5 hours for install. Some, like the late model Mercedes GL550, specifies 4.9 hours. This install time is then added to the sealant cure time (usually 30-60 minutes depending on temperature and humidity that day) to arrive at the SDAT (Save Drive Away Time). 99% of the time, that is how long it takes to complete the install. However, in some cases, there are circumstances that are unseen when the vehicle arrives that only become visible after the broken glass is removed. An issue such as rust in the pinchweld or a body seam crack would elongate the installation time. We generally ask customers to leave the car most of a day to ensure we have enough time to do the job correctly and allow a small cushion if something unexpected arises with the install. And if you need something to do while we work on your car, there are several places to shop and eat and even a movie theatre within walking distance.
Insurance Claim?
No problem, we are approved by all insurance networks; no insurance companies process their own glass claims anymore. They pretty much all use networks. And please remember, you have the right to take your car anywhere you choose for glass replacement. If the network your insurance company has chosen tries to “steer” you away from your chosen repair facility, that’s illegal and we encourage you to report it to your insurance company and agent immediately. In fact, we’re happy to help customers set up claims on a 3-way call. Networks generally don’t try to steer when they know we are on the call with you acting as your advocate. If we can make this process easier for you, please call us. We are here to help.
